Communication between visual storytellers and scientists // Eugene Simon Polzik & Bastian Leonhardt Strube

The project strives to show how animation can help and enrich the public outreach of scientific research, in this case in the field of quantum physics.

The film will revolve around an experiment done at The Danish Center for Quantum Optics (QUANTOP) at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. The ‘story’ will be one of a measurement. At the core of their experiment is the attempt to go beyond the quantum limits of measurement. The level of detail at which we can observe the world before quantum mechanics slips the observed event away from under our vision into a fundamental uncertainty. The experiment itself is a practical implementation of theory. It’s elements; lasers, magnetic fields, spin directions, impacts, fluctuations and oscillation in motion all lend themselves well to be described by 3D animation.

The project will explore different cinematic languages.

Engrossing thrilling complexity, the rush of particles and flow of the camera through magnetic fields, streams of light and gas clouds of atoms, harrowing depths and the scale of events. Or have a voice guiding you to the safe repeating rhythm of simplified elements of a graph-like clarity.

The state of modern physics and the bizarre quantum nature of reality it describes is perplexing, it resists comprehension. Even physicists admit that.
You are forced to shed the intuition of the world at our scale to have hope of grasping it. Animation too ​is oddly abstract in conception. There is nothing before a pen touches paper, nothing really moving across the screen and nothing real for the camera to grab hold of. ‘Mis en scène’ is conjured from abstraction.
Physics has always relied on analogy to explain its concepts and animation has always acted as analogy to the real.

We hope to show that through animation, the abstract nature of our quantum world could seem a little more real to us at our scale.


Eugene Simon Polzik

Eugene Simon Polzik, Professor and Director at QUANTOP, Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen

Eugene Simon Polziks research is centered around quantum uncertainties, quantum teleportation and quantum entanglement. The puzzling quantum features of the world first discovered for tiny particles, such as atoms, are now being observed with large objects. Thus the boundary between the quantum world and the everyday classical world is becoming more illusive. The joint project on the animation film between the NBI and the Animation College is aimed at visualization of quantum puzzles.


Bastian Leonhardt Strube

Bastian Leonhardt Strube, Independent Animator and Producer at Arsenalet, Viborg.

Since graduating from the computer graphics bachelor at The Animation Workshop/VIA University College in 2013, Bastian has sought to apply his background in animated film in different contexts. For two years he was part of the Stockholm based game company Might and Delight bringing several of their artistic interactive narratives and games through production. Since he has taken part of a wide range of projects; from developing an animated climate documentary with the studio Precious Metals, to creating graphics for the oddball game Keyboard Sports by the Copenhagen developer Triband, as well as several other film and game projects. Latest he took part in Animation Sans Frontiere, an initiative to spur co-production of animation across europe.
His interests has kept him learning the ever developing tools and software and experimenting in the narrowing divide between the interactive digital and the visual storytelling of linear media.
